Janet York, PhD, PMHCS, BC, FAAN is the Director of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Residency at the Robert Wood Johnson Veteran Affairs (VA) Medical Center (funded by the VA Office of Academic Affiliations), an Adjunct Research Professor of Nursing, Medical University of South Carolina, and a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. She was funded by the VA health services research and development with Dr. Kathryn Magruder for a multisite randomized controlled trial study comparing training modes and outcomes in the assessment and management of suicidality for mental health providers.

As a suicidologist for almost 30 years, her activities have included prevention research, clinical practice, policy, advocacy, forensics, philanthropy, and scholarship. She received (with Drs. Markus Kruesi and Jay Hirsch) the Norbert and Charlotte Rieger Service Award from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for their University of Illinois at Chicago youth suicide prevention program sponsored by Ronald McDonald’s Children Charities. She is the coauthor of the Emergency Department Means Restriction Intervention, designated as an effective program in the SPRC Evidence-Based Suicide Prevention Programs and the NREPP. She has been a national trainer in the assessment and management of suicidality for active duty military providers and a leader in the development of a national competencies in suicide prevention for generalist inpatient nurses.
